Realistic Painting in Watercolor
Beginners to Some Skill : Thursdays, July 9th – August 13th • 9:00am – 12:00pm
Join award-winning artist and MAA member, Todd Zalewski, as he teaches about the tools and techniques in creating realistic watercolor paintings.
In this 6-week class for adults, you will learn about the various techniques of watercolor painting, different materials used in painting, the importance of sketching prior to painting, and how to set up a studio. This class is open to beginners and advanced students. Class instruction will be tailored to the skill level of each student’s ability. During the class Todd will demonstrate the following techniques: dry-brush, wet on wet, gouache on toned paper, and the use of masking fluid/tape as paint restrictor. Subject matter considerations will also be discussed.

About the Instructor
Todd, a freelance artist with more than 20 years’ experience, has been nationally recognized for his realistic bird and wildlife art. During his career, he has been invited to exhibit at the prestigious society of illustrators, joining the ranks of artists such as N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell. He has created illustrations of birds, wildlife and prehistoric animals for books and numerous publications, such as the Field Guide to North American Mammals. He has won commissions from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the New Jersey State Aquarium, and the Philadelphia Zoo. And finally, Todd worked with Lenox to create The Lenox Signature Black-capped Chickadee, an original work of art that captures the spirit of this small, active songbird.

• Paints
– Watercolor tube paint.

• Palette
– White metal butcher pans,
– Small bowls (glass or ceramic will do)
• Short wide glass jar (old salsa jars are perfect, will be used to hold water)
• Paper
– Strathmore Mixed Media Paper Vellum Surface 400 series 11”x14”, comes in pad of 15 sheets
– 8.5”x11” bond/copier paper white (Used as mask/protective cover for the Bristol paper)
• Blue Painter’s Tape, 1inch wide (#2020 Scotch brand is fine, found at hardware stores/Home Depot)
• Exacto knife
• Kneaded Eraser and if you can find (not super necessary) a white Hi-Polymer Eraser (usually found in a rectangle shape)
• Pencils (HB or B if you have them or a standard No2 Ticonderoga pencil)
• Roll of paper towels (or a good amount)
