Upon Further Reflection… – David Rabkin

September 27 – November 2

Ballroom Gallery

The works in Upon Further Reflection… invite us to explore the places and moments that touch us, what we feel when we’re there in the moment, and what we see that shapes our feelings.

By combining and modifying photographs that include the visual elements that most stir our emotions and by damping down elements that distract, these works express not so much what each scene looks like but what it felt like in the moment.

“Upon Further Reflection began taking shape in 2023 when, in the process of experimenting with images of a sunrise, I created something new, the work titled Greet the Day. It captured what I felt during that sunrise, not just what I saw. How it did this was a bit of a mystery to me at the time, and to some extent still is today. This exhibition represents two years of work in which I’ve learned about, further developed, and started to move beyond the techniques used in that first image.

The pieces are photographic works, shaped by my experience working in other media, from woodworking to stained glass. I have undoubtedly been influenced by a grandfather who was a photographer, painter and woodworker and a mother with a keen eye for craftsmanship in all its forms. Two careers – in software engineering and in the museum field – have provided technical skills and the opportunity to create on the vast “canvasses” – exhibition halls, art galleries, and planetarium domes – that comprise science museums. They have also given me a keen interest in the human mind and shaped how I see and create. Through my work, I explore the nature of perception and the ways in which we make meaning from the things we sense.”
