About the Instructor
My name is Joli Ayn Wood and my passion is Better Living Through Art. My passion is bringing art into my local community along the North Shore of Boston. Whether it is painting what inspires me, or teaching and demonstrating my painting techniques, I enjoy helping those around me discover the healing and therapeutic qualities of making art.
When painting, I work mainly in oils, on many different surfaces, and I enjoy painting out of doors, and from life, most of all. I long to capture what it feels like to be in a place as it is on that day. When I’m not trekking out to paint the marshes, forests, and rocky coasts of New England, you may find me painting at the local cafe, school, or even at your next corporate event.
I love sharing my painting process with public painting demonstrations, as well as private instruction, teaching budding artists of all ages. In addition to creating, I enjoy organizing art events for my fellow artists, connecting them within their own communities.

Supply List
Following are suggested materials to get you started in your painting journey! These should all be available locally from Art Supply Wholesale on Rt. 1A in Beverly or from online suppliers. For the bulk of what I list, I prefer shopping local as the difference in price is not remarkable (if there is a difference in price), and you get to touch the merchandise before purchase.
Required Materials
PAINTS – Windsor Newton Artisan Studio Set (water mixable oils) 10 tubes of 37ml each. A terrific set for people just learning to paint. Sold locally. $50. I might recommend a few extra tubes as the class progresses.
BRUSHES – The art store carries a wide variety. They have a basic set noted for this class, Princeton Long White Talkon brushes for around $13.00.
A step up from this would be to purchase Princeton Dakota brand. I prefer these for how they spread the paint, their springy nature, and they hold up well over time. Whichever option, make sure the brushes are for oil painting. Some sizes to get:
- #4 round (for this brush only I recommend Princeton green handles, hog bristle)
- #4, #8, #10 flat brushes
- #6 bright
- #8 filbert
- Any size fan brush
OTHER
- Palette knife for mixing colors
- Jack Richeson Grey Matters Palette Paper, 12×16 size
- Any type of acrylic primed canvas panels or stretched canvas (Windsor Newton makes terrific, affordable
- canvas panels – at the local art store)
- Neutral warm gray acrylic paint (Amsterdam or Liquitex)
- Roll of blue painters tape
- Paper towels or blue shop towels
- “Gloves in a bottle” or W/N Artguard, barrier cream to protect hands
Optional Materials
- Masterson Stay Wet Artist Palette – This air-tight box keeps paints fresh in between painting sessions. The 12×16 palette paper pad fits nicely, and I’ve seen most students purchase one once they see how it can help. Not local, purchase from Amazon for around $24.
Class Schedule
- Color mixing lesson – creation of color wheels, neutrals exercise
- Joli’s 5-step process for painting – demonstration and student practice of how to start a painting
- Painting skies and clouds
- Painting the surf
- Painting the land
- Painting buildings
