Gallery Retail and Administrative Associate
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Gallery Retail and Administrative Associate will be responsible for a wide range of gallery, retail and administrative responsibilities. The 20 hour, part time position requires excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and retail management skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
To act as greeter to visitors, to sell artwork and artisan shop merchandise. To take and follow through on telephone inquiries, registration for classes and programs and complete light administrative tasks as directed by the Director of Operations.
GREETER:
Responsible for greeting visitors to the MAA, explaining the various exhibits on view, the general layout of the galleries and providing visitors with a brief overview of the MAA history and King Hooper Mansion. Must have the social skills required to interface with the general public, intern staff, membership, volunteers and the Board of Directors.
GALLERY/RETAIL:
Strong computer skills are required to complete the following:
- Generate gallery sales, artisan shop sales, registration and monitoring of classes, events
- Maintain familiarity with MAA events and exhibits
- Process Shop and Gallery sales, returns, and exchange transactions
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional and welcoming atmosphere in Galleries and Shop
- Ensure that exhibitions listings and program brochures are available in all galleries.
- Promote the Artisan Shop on social media with photographs and regular updates
- Recruit new vendors and new members.
- Take ownership of window design and merchandise displays.
FINANCIAL:
- At the start of shift, is responsible for ensuring that the cash drawer is accurate.
- Must make accurate change, and record and keep charges and receipts for all sales.
- At end of shift, responsible for balancing total sales with receipts and completing the POS accounting for that shift.
- Accurate completion of daily sales report at the end of each shift.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Open and close mansion galleries while following set procedures
- Responsible for assisting with storage of paintings
- Communicate with other staff members on important matters to include phone inquiries, gallery sales, program and class enrollment and rental inquiries.
- Responsible for other tasks that may be necessary to assist with the general operations of the MAA.
- Oversee that all housekeeping is freshened up on a regular basis and before receptions and evening programs.
- Attend monthly staff meetings as scheduled.
- Bring any anomalies with respect to shop or gallery operations to the attention of the Director of Operations.
SKILLS:
This is an in person position. Candidates must be able to stand for long periods of time, must be able to carry up to 30lbs and be able to use stairs. Candidates should be self-starting problem solvers, able to work independently with a strong customer service orientation and attention to procedural detail. Computer literacy is a must and a retail background is a plus.
REQUIREMENTS:
High School or equivalent with a background in retail customer service. The ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, occasional evenings, attend monthly staff meetings.
Founded in 1922, the Marblehead Arts Association, (MAA) located in the historic King Hooper Mansion, showcases local and regional art including fine art, photography and craft. With a membership of approximately 500 artistically diverse artists, associate and corporate members, the MAA annually exhibit over 1200 works of art in six galleries. The MAA mission is to provide vibrant programming and community education that inspires all ages.
The successful candidate will be an artist, or an art lover and someone who is familiar with non-profits. Retail experience is strongly preferred and the ability to occasionally carry up to 30lbs up two flights of stairs is a must. An outgoing and friendly demeanor is imperative as is the ability to multi task, think on your feet and to maintain a sense of humour when things get stressful.
Social media, PR and writing skills are an asset as is web design or editing. Attention to detail is important as is communication and working effectively as a member of a team.
This position has the potential to grow into more hours and more responsibilities.
