Annette Sykes

As an observational artist rooted in the vibrant community of Boston’s North Shore, Annette Sykes captures the essence of local people, landscapes, and objects. Drawing inspiration from the dynamic figures around her, the coastal beauty of Kings Beach and Red Rock Park, and the history-rich treasures discovered while antique hunting with her husband, Bob, these influences converge in her paintings. Using pastel, watercolor, and oil, her work strikes a balance between stylization and approachable realism.

Living near the shoreline has shaped Annette’s deep connection to nature, particularly the ever-changing light along the coast. Painting en plein air allows her to immerse herself in the environment, creating art that reflects not only what she sees but also the profound sense of belonging she feels in her community.

Antique hunting further enriches her practice. Annette and Bob explore New England, photographing the curated arrangements of antique dealers and uncovering objects that evoke layers of nostalgia and history. These discoveries inspire her work and align with her commitment to sustainability, celebrating preservation while keeping items out of landfills.

Annette’s artistic journey began in the Midwest, grew through fashion design studies in New York, and evolved into fine arts in Boston and San Francisco. Earning an MFA from the California College of the Arts laid the foundation for over two decades of creative exploration on the North Shore. As Executive Director of the Galleries at LynnArts (GALA), she fosters community through exhibitions and a weekly Figurative Art Drawing Group.

Ultimately, Annette’s art is a tapestry of exploration and connection, reflecting the textures, colors, and stories that shape her life. Each piece celebrates the interplay between the past and present, grounding her in the cultural fabric of her surroundings.
