Unbound Abstractions – Lucia Balinbin

August 8 – September 19

Unbound Abstractions is Balinbin’s first solo exhibition at the Marblehead Arts Association, featuring a collection of contemporary mixed media abstract works on canvas, linen, paper, and wood that celebrate experimentation, layered surfaces, and expressive visual storytelling. Unbound Abstractions is an invitation to experience art in its purest state—free, expressive, and unrestrained.

Artist’s Statement

My work is not bound by rules or rigid structure; instead, it flows freely, guided by feeling, intuition, and the energy of the moment.

Each painting, and work on paper and wood in this collection reflects my inner world—raw, fluid, and ever-evolving. Using acrylic paint, handmade collage pieces, color pencils, and texture compound, I approach a surface with an open heart, allowing my emotions to translate into bold strokes, delicate marks, and layered textures. There is no predetermined path, only embracing spontaneity, and trusting where it leads.

When a viewer encounters my work, they bring their own emotions, memories, and interpretations, making each experience deeply personal.

“Unbound Abstractions” is an invitation to experience art in its purest state—free, expressive, and unrestrained.

About the Artist: Lucia Balinbin

Lucia Balinbin is a mixed media abstract artist based in Marblehead, Massachusetts, whose work explores the intersection of nature, urban environments, and personal experience. Through layered compositions, rich textures, vibrant color, and intuitive mark-making, she creates visual narratives that invite reflection, discovery, and emotional connection.

Balinbin earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Seattle University, where she studied painting, sculpture, and design. Although she spent many years building a corporate career, she remained committed to her artistic practice. Over time, her work evolved from classical portraiture and still life to contemporary mixed media abstraction, where she embraces experimentation with color, line, texture, and composition.

Her work has received awards from the Marblehead Arts Association and the Artist’s Workshop in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. In 2026, she was awarded a grant through the Essex County Community Foundation’s Creative County Initiative in support of her artistic practice. Her paintings and mixed media work are held in private collections throughout the United States. As an active member of the Marblehead Arts Association and the Newburyport Art Association, Balinbin continues to expand her artistic presence through exhibitions and community engagement.
