About the Liz Larrabee Scholarship

Michele Martin and her sister Nancy wanted to make a lasting tribute to their artist mother, Liz Larrabee, in a way that encouraged young people to continue their love of art and their arts education onto college and beyond. They created the Liz Larrabee Scholarship in conjunction with the Marblehead Arts Association, which is a $1000 bursary towards college fees, awarded every year to Marblehead high school seniors who stand out in their artistic talent and commitment to the arts.

Liz Larrabee herself was life-long, “super-creative” person and talented artist, who enjoyed working in a number of mediums, such as charcoals and detailed architectural ink drawings. She always encouraged creativity in her two daughters when they were growing up, doing arts and crafts together, and Martin fondly remembers their mother making clothes for the family from the old McCall paper sewing patterns.

Martin is a long-time supporter of the Marblehead Arts Association and a former Board Member and Vice President, who believes passionately in promoting the arts, especially for young people. She considers the arts under-represented in overall high school scholarship options and is pleased to redress the balance somewhat with this arts bursary. The bursary rewards creativity, commitment and exceptional talent and aims to encourage young people to continue making a difference through their art.

Anna Ranan

Anna Ranan

Homeschooled

Anna’s love of art was ignited by her grandmother who lived in Marblehead. Her grandmother had a studio in her house and Anna grew up enjoying art there together. Her grandmother loved the town and often painted outside in nature, setting up her easel on the causeway. She taught Anna how to paint with watercolors and they did printing together, using her grandmother’s own unique, print-making technique at home using a glass table!

Her other favorite mediums are acrylic and pencil drawing and Anna is honored to have received the Liz Larrabee Scholarship award which will help and encourage her to keep exploring her art.

Nature is one of Anna’s greatest inspirations. She used to work at Marblehead Garden Centre and loves drawing flowers and plants, and appreciates the intricate beauty of nature – just like her grandmother.

“Art helps me relax and express myself when I can’t find the words”.  – Anna Ranan

Lucy Bland

Lucy Bland

Marblehead High School

Lucy is a Marblehead High School graduate, who has studied art at Acorn Gallery School of Art and also been active with the Marblehead Arts Association promoting art created by young people in the community. Lucy works with oil paints, charcoal and oil pastel, as well as watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic and print-making.

Lucy is going to Virginia Commonwealth University this fall. Her plan for college is to major in painting and eventually get her masters. She is really excited to see how her art and subject matter changes in a new environment and under new leadership. This scholarship will help Lucy to attend a school that she feels will be able to challenge her in a new city environment that will provide her with new inspiration.

“I love to tell personal stories through my art, sometimes through details that only I can read. I feel like I know myself better thanks to my art and I am able to convey parts of myself to others that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to.” – Lucy Bland
