Heidi Caswell Zander

A sense of cultural, historic place is an aspect of CaswellZander’s Art. It relates to“ Where Do We Come From, What Are We? Where Are We Going?” (Gauguin). We each have our own unique place in answering these questions. We are accustomed to past and present norms. We live in degrees of awareness. Art and Politics provide a mirroring of inner thoughts and values of societies.

Caswell Zander distills from observation the essence of objects: native colors, subtleties of relationships, harmonies and contrasts. Core throughout her Art making is nature, the familiarities of surroundings and memories, and opening dialogue between subject, artist and viewer. Art is her favorite form of communication. It evolves through the making of marks. There is an energy displayed by the strokes which are carefully layered and retained to the final image. They speak of her passion in connecting thought, process and experience into a visible realm.

HCZander’s work bares the imprint of growing up immersed in the Art of CapeAnn, the emphasis of observed subject matter. As a youth summer days were spent in adult workshops absorbing the enthusiasm for capturing a cloud on 140 lb. watercolor paper, for being a link between natural wonder observed (on location) to its impression on a rectangle which would be hung on a wall. Early on she embraced Mattise’s statement of wanting her Art to be for the viewer like a gentle armchair at day’s end. Also relevant is the concept from Picasso, “ Art is the lie that tells the truth”.

Living as an expatriate studying with RISD in Rome for a year and a decade of teaching Art for the German government in Berlin expanded her understanding of Art’s lineage and its diverse communication abilities.
