Statement

My art stems from a deep intrinsic impulse to convey the beauty of nature. Finding my own sense of spirituality in the garden/woods/mountains/coast, I believe the abundance and diversity surrounding us is a necessary counterpoint to the issues and upsets in our world. Art focusing on nature reminds us of the imperative to create climate solutions that preserve the treasures of our planet.

I paint what I love: flowers, plants and animals as well as landscape and seascape. My goal is to share visually the everyday blessings that bring us comfort and joy. I am constantly struck by ingenious designs in nature – simple ones like the shape and color of flora, or light on water, or clouds in the sky, and also more intricate designs like spiderwebs or the fibonacci spiral of seeds in a sunflower.

Style

Working with oils, I apply thick layers of highly saturated colors to a black background in a stylized approach reminiscent of stained glass. My richly colored paintings vibrate with heightened aliveness – a visual sharing of beauty and life force.

In my studio I focus on detailed botanical and floral themes, while my plein air work explores both landscape and plants in a looser style, seeking to capture a changing moment. Plein air is new to my repertoire, and I am still learning but also loving the pressure and excitement of painting outdoors.
