RED SHOW

March 2023

“‘The Heat Is On’. Scorching heat, deadly floods, wildfires and drought. Around the world, climate change continues to make the unprecedented precedent and to deadly effect”.
The Journal of Cardiology, November 2022.

The MAA would like to invite our artist-members to submit works in various media to show what climate change means to them.

Over the years, a series of shows with environmental themes have been presented at the Marblehead Arts Association. The GREEN SHOW: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle took place in April 2009. The King Hooper Mansion was filled with works in various media depicting the beauty of our planet and the threat of possible destruction. A few years later, the BLUE SHOW took place. Works of art related to our precious resource, water, were exhibited and just before the pandemic in January 2020 we organized the TREE SHOW. The variety of works was impressive.

And now, inspired by the Boston Globe headline, “Into The Red – Climate And The Fight Of Our Lives” we chose to do the RED SHOW, which will open in March of 2023.

The MAA is encouraging our artist members to submit works in various media to show what climate change means to them. Ideas include various artwork depicting our beautiful planet in all it’s glory or how we can, in many ways, reduce our carbon footprint by driving less, walking more, riding a bicycle or using public transport. Also, buying local and seasonal food and reducing food waste. We can establish safe places for birds to nest and rest by using less pesticide. We might convert laws and gardens to native plants, plant more trees, compost…many of these activities can be illustrated by artists and we will show how the artist community is touched.

  • Take in for the RED SHOW will be Tuesday, February the 28th from 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM. The opening reception for the RED SHOW is Sunday, March the 5th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
  • Take down is Tuesday, April 18th, 9:00 – 8:00 PM.

Our Artist members are invited to submit 1 or 2 pieces of work to the RED SHOW. This exhibit is open to all mediums. Please print out and fill this form prior to submitting.

The MAA may need to select only one piece due to space restrictions. There is a take in fee of $10 per piece. There will be ballots available for visitors to cast votes for their favorite piece with a People’s Choice Award to be announced at the end of the exhibit.

EXHIBITOR INFORMATION: All work must be framed and wired. No wet paintings will be accepted. Metal frames over 40 inches must have plexiglas rather than glass. All 2 dimensional works MUST have screw eyes (or the like) and wire across the back of the work. MAA has the right to reject work that does not comply with this.

Please note, the MAA has a limited number of pedestals available; sculptors should provide their own pedestals or check with staff about availability.

Artists are asked to email an image of their work to exhibitions@marbleheadarts.org along with the title, media, dimensions and price. Please email xhazzie@marbleheadarts.org with any questions.
