
On Sunday, May 18th at 3:00 PM the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) through its Programs and Education Committee will host landscape architect and artist Cate Oranchak, MLA, for a single lecture “Sticks and Stones, The Sculptural Landscape.” A reception will follow. Ms. Oranchak will share with the audience beautiful images from her extensive work in landscape design from residential-scale gardens to large-scale urban, waterfront and civic projects. This award-winning professional will define ways to manipulate the landscape as both sculpture and art to create meaningful and useful outdoor spaces. Drawing from examples of work both large and small, this program will be inspirational to the weekend gardener and the seasoned professional.
Focusing on the elements of landscape design, Oranchak will discuss and provide examples of innovative ways to combine earth, water and plant material to create desired effects. Demonstrating ways sticks and stones can transform the landscape; she will also show how color form and texture in plant material are powerful tools for creating impactful design.
Oranchak, a graduate of Harvard University School of Design, is a registered Landscape Architect and Senior Associate at Sasaki Associates, a world renowned interdisciplinary design firm. Working with the firm’s architects, planners, engineers and interior designers, she has had a leading role on many important projects in the United States and abroad during her ten-year tenure with the firm.
Oranchak has worked on numerous waterfront projects, such as the Cincinnati Central Riverfront Park; Robert Moses State Park, Massena, NY; US Embassy, Seoul, Korea; and the Queen’s Landing: Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has also participated in projects at such renowned institutions as the Interlochen Center for the Arts, University of Chicago and Loyola College.
Cate Oranchak has been a guest critic and a visiting faculty member of various institutions including; the Rhode Island School of Design, the Landscape Institute at the Arnold Arboretum, Boston Architectural Center and the Radcliffe Seminars. She has also published articles for the GSD News, Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
The lecture on May 18th at 3:00 PM will be held in the Ballroom Gallery of the Hooper Mansion at 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead. “It is fascinating to see how a landscape architect uses the earth, sky and plant material to create a personal vision and how this inspires all of us to create our own garden spaces.” states Nicholas Delegianis, Chair of the Programs and Education Committee for the MAA.
